Juice Plus

Some of you know that I signed up to try Juice Plus. This is a whole-food supplement (fruits and veggies) that is taken much like you’d take your daily vitamins. It’s been around for a while and there’s lots of science to back up their claims, but. For those of you who don’t know me, I was raised to question everything, so I had to try it myself before I could honestly recommend it to any of my friends, family or associates. Here’s the shortened version of my experience so far:

My kids and I began taking Juice Plus in April. If this stuff was as great as I had been hearing, I wasn’t about to deny my kids the possible benefits. Plus, each adult can sponsor a child to get the stuff for free! So, I started them on it as well. I’m not a big fan of swallowing a bunch of pills, so I opted for the chewable form for myself and the kids. Yes, SUCH the mature choice, I know. I figured I could split my “dose” and give my youngest part of my regiment. I got the kids all set up, we even started a calendar  they could initial when they took their Juice Plus. It was a way of getting them into a routine and making some fun of it as well. (When the calendar didn’t have any spaces were they forgot, they would get a small prize.)

Things immediately went very well. The “chews” are really good, they taste like their little gummy treats, so there was no problem getting them to take the Juice Plus. Right away, I discovered I would have to order a children’s order for my daughter because she was so into having the same thing as her brother. Frankly, I wasn’t wanting to share my “dose” with her anyway. I’m a sweet-aholic and they were becoming my evening “dessert.” ;)

We are generally, a heathy bunch for the most part, so I didn’t expect some miraculous result. It also takes 6 months for your body to completely replace all the cells in your body, so we’re still in the process of building the benefits of Juice Plus. With that being said and knowing this, I was still seriously disappointed when me and the kids got sick about a month into taking Juice Plus. In my head, this was going to be the answer to relieving us from all the germs kids spread around amongst themselves doing whatever kids do. Like I said, we are generally healthy, but I have to say, there doesn’t seem to be a cold that goes by without stopping at our house and turning into an ear infection, upper/lower respiratory infection, etc…. SO. I was bummed.

We didn’t give up and continued taking our Juice Plus as directed. Reflecting back on the cold that weaseled it’s way around the family, I have to say, it didn’t last very long. For me and the kids it was the mildest one yet. My mom was not interested in Juice Plus and said she would “see how things went” with us. Have to say, she also got that cold and boy, she got it bad. I will, out of respect for her, not go into detail, but that’s when I started to realize we might be onto something. (sorry, Mom…)

School gets out and the sniffles become less of a threat due to better weather and less hand-to-other-kid’s-snot ratio. Grant had fewer allergy attacks and it wasn’t from the lack of pollen, this year has been crazy! We continue to take to Juice Plus, rarely missing a day.

A couple weeks ago, I felt a little under the weather. My throat was doing weird things, I had a headache and have been informed that I was more irritable than usual. (me? never.) I immediately started taking a few more chews a day and adding extra Elderberry to my diet. I fought it for a while, but inevitably, I had a day where my nose went bazerk, running all over the place, my eyes were itchy and I sneezed give or take, a trillion times. Dangit. I’m taking all this Juice Plus and I’m NOT supposed to get sick! And here I am, SICK. UGH. Not cool. So, I loaded myself up with Hyland’s Homeopathic Cough and Cold, and went to bed. (Which by the way, is THE BEST for kids and adults. Can’t recommend it enough.) Next day, woke up with a slightly stuffy nose, realizing I had slept through the night without so much as a sniffle. Wow. Interesting. Maybe it was just an allergy attack?!? Didn’t have any symptoms the rest of the day. (I think I sneezed once, only because my makeup powder went up my nose.) So, I blew it off thinking it was just a really bad allergy attack and was super happy it was gone, whatever it was!

Two days later: Ava: “Mommyyyyyyyyyyyyy…… I don’t feel good. My nose is burning…” Great. Ava has a cold. So, I guess I really did have a cold. Hm. But it only lasted one day. WOW. SO, off to make Ava more comfortable. She basically went through the same thing did. One day of the sniffles and then, POOF! She woke up totally fine! I couldn’t believe it! Grant NEVER got it!

The only thing we have been doing differently is taking Juice Plus! I have to give credit where credit is due. There are a few of my friends that swear by Juice Plus, but I had to see some serious results before I could honestly recommend it myself. They’ve done extensive research on how Juice Plus can also greatly benefit those that have auto-immune disorders. It seems to help with the joint issues and swelling. Juice Plus is very simple. It’s whole foods made bio-available in a convenient size. Juice Plus helps to bridge the gap between the fruits and veggies you are supposed to eat, and what actually gets consumed. Here I go sounding like a saleswoman, but I have to say, so far so good! I would absolutely give this stuff a try! Juice Plus can only do good, it’s organic and healthy. Yes, I signed up to be a distributor, so you can get it through me…  contact me if you have any questions or are interested in giving it a go. This is not a vitamin and doesn’t interact with any medications! It’s FOOD! :)

Cellulite, Fat, Lymph and Other Gross Stuff

This is going to be one of THOSE articles that grosses us out, but is loaded with really interesting and important information. (and I apologize, pretty long. But so interesting!) I am going to give some medical explanations of things, but will keep the definitions understandable for those with no medical background. Here goes:

Let’s start with the Lymphatic System. We need to understand what is does in order to better understand it’s importance (and relation to cellulite which is what we REALLY want to better understand). The Lymphatic System is basically a flushing system that our body uses to get rid of toxins and excess fluid waste throughout the body. This system helps us maintain a healthy balance by collecting accumulated fluid around cells and returning it into the circulatory system. It plays an active part in immune defense by filtering out and destroying foreign substances and microorganisms, plays an active role in digestion by absorbing fats from the small intestines. The movement of the skin, body and joints is what gives this system it’s ability to circulate. *This will be important later class.*

Lymph: This is the fluid around the cells that comes from the blood as it seeps throughout the capillaries. This is what I want to get moving and flowing. The circulation of this fluid is referred to as Lymphatic Circulation. It is separated into two main categories. The first being 60-70% of all the fluid which is superficial, or located just under the skin. This layer is not stimulated by exercise, but by manipulation of the skin and superficial layers of tissue. The second and deeper layer is deep in the muscles and is activated by muscular contraction. (Let’s just worry about the superficial layer for now.)

What does this mean for us? Well, obviously, lots of things. What we are interested in for this article is how the Lymphatic System NOT working correctly can cause us all sorts of problems when it comes to Fat and Cellulite. The implications of your Lymphatic System not working well are very serious. It is your bodies’ toxic waste flushing system! Two EASY ways of helping it work better is drink water and get a massage! Back to FAT and CELLULITE….

Cellulite: EW. GROSS. COTTAGE CHEESE. Wear a bathing suit? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Cellulite creates panic in so many people, usually women, since we are the ones sporting those nasty dimples. Gotta admit, men aren’t big fans of cottage cheese thighs either. A nice round rump, yes. Not one that looks like a battle ground. What is Cellulite? Cellulite is the alteration and degeneration of the connective tissue and fat cells. Sit tight, I’m getting to the translation. Cellulite forms when fat cells are being starved of oxygen and nutrients. Because of poor circulation, the lymph builds up. Now remember from our previous lesson that the lymphatic system uses the lymph to flush out toxic waste from the cells and keep our cells healthy and happy. This is no longer happening because due to poor circulation, the dirty, toxic lymph is trapped! This creates a vicious cycle of fluid being trapped around the cells and bloating the tissue with toxic waste. Eventually the tissue gets really irritated (wouldn’t you?) and begins to form clumps and hard bubbles of tissue called fibroids. These fibroids and the swollen fat cells mixed with the trapped lymph create CELLULITE! We have a layer of fat over most of our bodies. Have you ever wondered why we only have cellulite in some places? Why is it that even very thin people get cellulite? Well, this is the answer! It’s bad circulation that leads to trapped toxic fluids that cause hard balls of tissue to occur, creating the dimpling effect. Simple. Ew.

Cellulite can be caused by a number of things. Circulation, genetics, reduced vein flow, impaired lymphatic drainage (possibly from lymph node removal or other injury), fluid retention, female hormones, pregnancy, stress (see how bad stress is?), sedentary and toxic lifestyle, SMOKING, enlarged lymph nodes are some of the main reasons.

How Do We Get Rid Of It?: There are a few ways. Obviously, you need to get your body healthy. Proper hydration is VITAL, clean foods, MOVING AROUND, will all contribute to reduction in cellulite formation. For the cellulite that is already in your body, I have a solution. It’s not perfect, but it can be a HUGE improvement. You HAVE to bring circulation to the tissue first, then you must break up the tissue. Now I know that sounds a little scary, but I assure you, it is not. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I have seen it all. As a mother of two, I HAVE it all! (omg did I just admit to having cellulite? pshh.) I have discovered in my practice that the use of Massage Cupping has had a significant effect on cellulite smoothing! The suction from the cups first brings circulation back to the area. Then with a more intense vacuum, starts to break up the hard lumps of tissue and helps the body release that trapped toxic fluid and smooth out the cells! This smooths out the skin! YAY!!! SO. Not only have we improved your circulation which is obviously VERY HEALTHY, we have RELEASED TOXINS (again HEALTHY), (don’t forget you’re going to get some serious muscle relaxation and releases from all this work. bonus!), and we have SMOOTHED OUT THAT CELLULITE! NO NEEDLES< SURGERY OR DOWN TIME! We can’t get rid of the fat cells, but we can sure smooth them out!

BODY CONTOURING: So, in light of the anatomy lesson we just had, let’s keep our thinking caps on a take this a step further. Ok people, let’s talk LOGIC. Not my favorite subject, I am a free thinker and have trouble with the concept. BUT. This even makes simple sense to my mind. IF one were to get a really thorough Lymphatic Drainage Massage that involves a warm aromatherapy wrap, and have their cellulite smoothed out on a consistent basis for about a month, they WILL CONTOUR THEIR BODY! Okok, here’s the deal: draining all that fluid waste out (you MUST hydrate to ensure proper flushing of grossness) will get rid of bloat and inches could be lost from those areas! YOU COULD LOSE INCHES OFF YOUR THIGHS, LEGS, BELLY, and the rest of you!!!!!! OMGOMGOMGOMG! THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! You can do this on your FACE too! Really gentle lymphatic drainage on your face can get rid of all sorts of puffiness from your forehead to your chin. Sweet.

Let’s Get To It!!

Update on the Body Contouring

Well my friends… So far I have done three sessions on one half of myself and I am pleasantly surprised at the results! I have started to see a smoothing of tissue as compared to the other side of my body!!!! This is definitely NOT a good course of treatment for someone that needs to see results ASAP. Just think how long it took your body to make all that cellulite. Not exactly going to smooth out all at once.

What I have discovered to be the best course of treatment is to offer a package of four sessions. This package, paid at the beginning of treatment will include a fifth session free. Guessing most people will need two full months of treatment. This is not a miracle people, but it is a much better alternative to liposuction!

***Two sessions the first week and one a week for the remaining three sessions.***

If you need more than one area of the body worked, the session will have to be longer and at that point you and I will discuss your options. So far I have found that 30 minutes is sufficient time to get good work done.

Feedback from my clients:
- Wow, that was so relaxing!
- Totally expected that to hurt, but it actually felt good.
- The suction felt weird, not bad, just different.
- I feel like I worked out my glutes.
- (next day) Omg, my booty totally feels like I worked out, like the muscles are sore, I love it!
- Was worried about it pulling my skin and causing damage, but it doesn’t pull on the skin. It’s deeper than surface.
- Um, can you just leave me here? I could totally take a nap…. ;)
- Contagious giggling when the cup unexpectedly comes loose from the skin and makes a hysterical smacking sound! It’s FUNNY! (and i can’t help but be startled. I am TOTALLY in the zone, fully CONCENTRATING on what I’m doing a POP! Suction breaks and I almost fall over… Hazard of the job, I guess.) ;D

Now, when I did this treatment to myself (on my lower glutes and over my upper ITband), it smarted somethin’ serious. I was concerned going over that same area on my clients would be hard on them. None of them have complained about actual pain. If they have issues with the muscular structure in those areas there was there a slight bit of discomfort. It occurred to me that the difference between what I was doing to myself and what I was doing to them was: I was standing and my muscles were tense. (duh) When the body is in a horizontal position, the muscles are relaxed and not fighting the suction. Totally makes sense. So, rest assured, this has got to be the most painless was to smooth out cellulite that actually works EVER! I’ll keep you updated as they make progress.

*I know everyone wants to see before and after pics, but…. (no pun intended)… Gonna have to come in, let me take a pic of YOUR trouble spots, keep it on YOUR camera and then YOU can compare YOURSELF. ;) I’m SO NOT posting pics of my toosh, nor anyone else I work on. That’s just ASKING for trouble!!!!

Massage Cupping and Body Contouring!

Oh wow people, I think I just stumbled of something amazing! Cupping has been done by Chinese Medicine Practicioners for thousands of years. (yeah, so I’m a little late. sorry!) The art of using the “cups” in massage (in the Western world), is fairly new. I am now offering Massage Cupping as part of my sessions! Please check out my page It’s just too cool!

I’m also offering a new session called Body Contouring. This proves to be a winner, and just in time for bikini weather! Check out my page on this summer saving treatment!

you get what you pay for…

Yeah, I know the place down the street is doing “foot massage” for a painfully low price. I KNOW Massage Envy is less per session and they have some really good therapists. Still…

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I’m sure everyone has heard a horror story about someone going somewhere trying to get the best deal and they end up getting themselves into more than they bargained for. I hear plenty of these stories, many with serious medical outcomes.

THERE IS A REASON MASSAGE THERAPISTS HAVE TO BE LICENSED! AN UNQUALIFIED PRACTITIONER CAN HURT YOU! (and not in that “hurts so good” way either)

MANY of those places offering cheap massage, do NOT have licensed massage therapists. Maybe the owner is, (or was), they have people trained in other countries that have not met the state’s rigid requirements. They are cutting corners somewhere. Practitioners are getting paid pathetically, some are being taken advantage of, forced to do things that will remain unmentioned on my page, etc… You get the idea.

I do not agree with supporting these businesses.

I understand the desire to save money. Massage is still considered by many to be a luxury. For those who require medical massage, it is IMPERATIVE to make sure you are working with someone that’s properly trained. Is the “foot massage” place willing to communicate with your doctor about your care? Can they be part of your medical team? Probably not. Do they have liability insurance? Possible, but not likely. Are they licensed to work on your entire body (because we know they do!) Are they working outside their scope of knowledge. Very possible. For those who’ve had a bad experience, they know what incredible amounts of pain a bad massage can cause. If a massage therapist plows through your body pushing and yanking, crushing and pressing, likely, SOMETHING is going to give… aaaaand, that will probably be YOUR body!!!!

*Friend sends me a message, she’s on the floor in excruciating pain, her neck is frozen and feels a huge amount of pressure. She is vomiting from the pain and close to passing out. What caused this? Well, after a trip to the ER and many hours at UCLA with specialists, a twisted nerve in her neck from a bad massage. Nice.

*An elderly woman with osteoporosis goes in for a massage at one of those Thai places. The girl walks on her back and cracks multiple ribs on the client. I have no problem with Thai massage and yes, they do walk on you. But that was completely inappropriate to do on an older client with brittle bones. Where’s the common sense?!

*Walk in and it’s a “full body massage” kind of place. AWKWARD.

*Gentleman is bruised from head to toe. The “practitioner” didn’t have the person sign an intake form, therefore, didn’t know the client was on blood thinners which can cause extensive bruising.

You get what you pay for.

To become a LMT, I had to spend MANY hours in training. Hundreds of hours of Anatomy, Physiology, classes about medical conditions, technique…. Every modality (type of massage) is taught separately and one must be able to prove a high level of sufficiency in order to become certified in each. I know a lot about the human body, function and most importantly when NOT to work on someone! Unfortunately many of these places hire people uneducated in the contraindications of massage. This can be deadly. I’m not trying to scare anyone out of getting a massage, but there is a huge difference in working with someone who knows what they are doing and someone who doesn’t! And they need to be able to communicate with you.

One last thing (ok, maybe two)…

Massage Envy. It’s a decent place. I have friends that work there, they went to school with me and are gifted therapists, amazing people and some of my closest friends. They need work just like everyone else. This does not excuse the fact that they are over worked, under paid and forced to push products and therapies you might not need. I don’t care for Massage Envy but I don’t look at them as my competition. They can’t offer the extensive service I do.

You really do get what you pay for when you have a session with me. My thorough training and continued education qualify me to do everything from relaxation and energy work to deep therapeutic massage. Doctors trust me. Some of my treatments are covered by insurance policies. I will even give you a receipt you can bill to your insurance. I have worked in a chiropractor’s office and continue to work on patients as part of an ongoing medical relationship. The state recognizes all of my training. I put my heart into my work, I really do love what I do. My sessions are thorough and done with the intention of helping your body facilitate it’s own ability to heal.

Get what you pay for and have a thorough, thoughtfully planned out session with me. I’m not the most inexpensive therapist out there, but I’ll make sure you feel like it was worth it. Thanks for reading! :)

Neuromuscular Re-Education

We love muscle memory when we’re at the gym, when we’re playing sports, or just walking, etc…. But seriously. When a muscle remembers something wrong, we are HATING life. Our muscles have memory in that they can be trained to perform certain functions. Thank goodness too! We wouldn’t want to learn how to walk again every morning!

What I want to talk about is when those muscles that we love, retain an incorrect “memory.” Say for example, you’re doing one of those silly things like putting a box up in the closet and… you twist wrong. (Or god forbid you bend down to tie your shoe lace and BAM. Your back is out.) Your back is really sore the next day. You power through it, because it’s just a muscle strain and it’ll go away soon. The next day you gingerly move around because, yeah, your back hurts. Eventually it goes away and you forget about it. The pain comes back every once in a while, not enough to alarm you, but just enough to annoy you. Eventually it gets to the point where you are too uncomfortable to ignore it. What has happened is a lot of things. Muscle memory being one of them. Your body created an improper “memory” not so much from the injury itself, but your body adapting to the injury! That injured muscle had to be protected by the muscles around it. If that happens for too long, those muscles get use to working improperly and begin a trend of accommodating an injury that still exists. I’m sure there’s an easier way to explain this. Basically, if you break your leg, you walk differently after. Your muscles have been damaged and if you don’t re-train them with their proper function, you will affect all the muscles around. And that old song we learned as kids is SO true. The knee bone is connected to the leg bone, the leg bone is connected to the hip bone… Oh great. So… what to do? Your muscles need to be re-educated.

There are many ways of doing this. Doctors, physical therapists and hm. Yes, massage. (I know, I know… SO coincidental considering what I do!) This form of therapy is often referred to as “Neuromuscular Re-Education.” Durring a session we work to re-train a muscle that has learned to do the “wrong” action. This is not a gentle massage. There are ways of doing this that are not as painful as some, but generally, there will be times when a “tap out” might be necessary. Going to a physical therapist for this will more than likely be MORE painful than coming to me. I just don’t have the heart to be that aggressive. NOT tat I don’t get things done. I was well trained by those who’s philosophy is such that causing too much pain is completely counter-productive! We manipulate the offending muscle and offer it a “new” action and… do this repetitively. This is not a one time fix and requirers a series of treatments, in fairly close proximity, in order for the muscle to retain the new “memory.” Just like when you’re learning to do a new exercise at the gym. It takes a couple times for your body to remember what to do. Once it has the “memory” though, look out. Things get easier and better from there. Trust me, this has been shown to bring relief to chronic issues that people figured they just had to live with because nothing else worked! It’s worth a try for sure!

Are you hydrated?

I can’t believe it. Never did I think I’d have a blog. Nor a reason for anyone to read it! My goal in doing all of this is to keep you “in the know” about all the great stuff I am learning in regards to massage. I know we are all really busy and don’t have time to read “blog novels” so I will do my best to keep these short and informative. Being in “alternative health,” I come across great tid-bits of information that just might help improve your life! So, for a teaser…. Lets’ talk WATER. Almost the entire adult population of this country in chronically dehydrated. Yikes! We need more water! Being chronically dehydrated can lead to ALL SORTS of health problems and they are big ones! When your body doesn’t have enough water, your cells dehydrate. When your cells dehydrate, they die, emit toxins and you start to poison yourself. This is when you get muscle cramping, irritability, (that feeling like you want to cry for absolutely NO reason), headaches, etc…. If you have these symptoms, you are already SEVERELY dehydrated! Your body is trying to tell you something is wrong…. Drink water, not Gatorade or any electrolyte replacements. Your body uses water to process these high sugar drinks and dehydrates you further! Water, water, water! I promise you, you’ll feel better! You will have more energy, more mental clarity and just all-around better health. Remember, we all have cancer in us. If we allow the tissues in our body to be chronically “ill” by dehydrating them, this can leave a place for cancer to grow. WOW! Drink your water! Here’s the guidelines for how much water to drink: You take the amount you weigh, divide it by half and convert the number to ounces and that is how many ounces of water to drink everyday. Minimum! Example: A 200lb adult. 200 divided by 2 equals 100. So, this adult needs to drink a minimum of 100oz of water a day to be properly hydrated. I know it sounds like a lot of water, but really, it’s not. Yes, the first couple days you will be going to the bathroom all the time. But soon your body will get use to the added volume and just love it! Your body does not have a storage facility, so drink water throughout the day. For every 8oz of other liquids you drink, your body needs 12oz of water to process it. woah. The only thing more hydrating than water is coconut water. So, water to start and if you can afford it, coconut water. It could save your life! Until next time, drink up! I’d love to hear how drinking more water has improved your life… :)
